Vacation in Ausseerland in Styria

The Ausseerland is also called as the tenth province of Austria. Although it lies in the heart of the republic, it is rather isolated.

Perhaps it is precisely this isolation that makes the Ausseerland so special. Those who consciously take time to understand the regions, the people and the traditions will experience unforgettable moments.

Altaussee, Bad Aussee, Grundlsee, Bad Mitterndorf and Tauplitz are among the most famous places in Austria and are surrounded by mountain giants such as Loser, Grimming and the Tote Gebirge.

Summer in Ausseerland

Latest in the Biedermeier era, when artists such as Adalbert Stifter, Franz Grillparzer or Rudolf von Alt recognized the beauty of Altaussee, the summer retreat was born. It´s still omnipresent today and those interested in art can follow the remaining footsteps of creative artists on the Via Artis.

Not only Lake Altaussee, but also Lake Grundlsee - called the Styrian Sea - and the legendary Lake Toplitzsee make up the summer retreat. If you want to become aware of the summer beauty of the Ausseerland, you should take a look at the crystal-clear water from above a ship. Whether from a nostalgic liner like the MS Rudolf or from a special boat, known in the region as "Plätte".

From the mountain peaks, the Ausseerland lies gracefully at its viewers' feet. While hiking, your view stretches over the various shades of blue of the lakes - from the Caribbean-looking turquoise blue of Lake Styria, to the deep blue of Lake Altaussee, which resembles that of an inkwell. In between, the lush green of the meadows and forests and picturesque villages.

On the Loser, climbers will find their personal challenge on the Loser-Panorama-via ferrata "Sisi". The via ferrata was set in honor of Empress Elisabeth, who shall has climbed the Loser on her own.

Bikers explore the multifaceted Ausseerland region on the sixth stage of the mountain-lake e-trail. On the route from Bad Aussee to Altaussee, bikers pass the romantic Salza reservoir and Lake Grundlsee. On the last part of the trail, along the high road to Altaussee, they are rewarded with a magnificent view.

 

 

 

 

WINTER in the Ausseerland

A blanket of snow gently covers the mountain peaks in the winter months, and transforms the Ausseerland into a winter sport destination. Winter sport enthusiasts feel at home in the family-friendly ski areas on the Loser, on the Tauplitz or in the Zlaim. Passionate cross-country skiers enjoy the varied Cross-Country skiing offers between Altaussee and Tauplitz.

The atmosphere is particularly magical when hiking through snow-covered forests and past sparkling lakes in which the snow-covered mountain peaks are reflected. Just as beautiful, but a little cosier, you can let yourself be enchanted by the Aussee winter on a horse-drawn carriage ride - wrapped in a cosy blanket.

Relaxation all year round

Visitors in Ausseerland experience relaxation all year round. The well-known health resort of Bad Aussee was awarded the designation of alpine bath as early as 1868. In the numerous spas and hotels with wellness areas, visitors treat themselves additionally with a dreamlike view of the mountains.

The Ausseerland may be located in a quiet surrounding - but people here know very well how-to party! As early as February, the carnival parades start the upcoming year of events. Between traditional festivals, such as the daffodil Festival or the UNESCO cultural heritage “Nikolospiel”, there is also always variety. Numerous cultural events by different artists drive the events calendar.

The spark finally ignites after enjoying delicacies from the Ausseerland region. Fresh fish, sweet gingerbread, homemade spirits and much more flatter the palate. Let the craftmanship of the “Ausseer” impress you.
