On the Riegersburgweg-Breitenfeld you can reach Riegersburg Castle on foot over the rolling hills and fairytale forests (with a ghost chapel).

The church of the Savior of the World, also called "Salvator-Mundi", built in the 17th century as a plague pilgrimage church, rises majestically in the small village of Breitenfeld on the Rittschein. The stately size and the rich and ornate decoration of the interior indicate the once great importance of the pilgrimage church. In the beginning, it was the horrors of the plague that brought many pilgrims here; today, people are invited to call upon the Savior of the World for help in the manifold needs of our time and to let themselves be touched by the baroque beauty of the church.

After leaving the village of Breitenfeld, you approach Riegersburg Castle by the shortest route. Over gentle hills, fairy-tale forest paths (in the middle of which is the so-called "Ghost Chapel"), after just under 5 km you arrive in the historic village of Riegersburg with its castle, which is over 850 years old. On the route are also culinary highlights and down-to-earth Buschenschänken.

From the pilgrimage and parish church Breitenfeld, in front of which also a modern Way of the Cross by Roswitha Dautermann as well as the Salvator Mundi circular route begins, we walk along the road in the direction of Riegersburg, but turn left immediately after the yellow hall (Bauer - ISTOBAL) and come in the next bend on an ascending forest path. Passing a sand pit, we get back on the road, go ahead to the crossroads and there turn half-right. From here, the East Austrian Long Distance Trail 07 also runs parallel to the road to Riegersburg. At the next intersection between isolated houses, we turn left and then immediately right again. Here the proud Riegersburg Castle appears in front of us for a short time, before it goes downhill between farms and meadows and finally on a hollow way to Oberlembach. Turn right and follow the local road in the valley for a short while until you reach the chapel, where you turn left in the direction of the ice rink. Immediately after the ice plant turn right and after about a hundred meters then right at the edge of the forest on a forest road up the mountain to the crossroads directly at the "Ghost Chapel", around which numerous legends entwine. Especially the devil is said to be a frequent guest here! Continuing through a beautiful forest, we soon reach Wippels Hofbergstubn. In the past we turned left, but now we also follow the 7er-Weitwanderweg directly to Riegersburg, until we pass the "Lasslhof" and reach the information and tourist office Riegersburg. The trail is not a circular route, but you walk it on the same route back to the starting point in Breitenfeld.

Smart backpack packing makes hiking life easier: Always question the equipment - what do I really need? Pay attention to a balanced load distribution. Carry heavy items as close to your body as possible. Put things that are needed often - such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map - in the top lid compartment. Take enough liquids with you and stow them in a side pocket so that they are within easy reach. Don't forget cash.
