Exercising the heart

Hiking in Southeast Styria

Holidaymakers are left fully satisfied in the Thermen- & Vulkanland. It’s not just about getting active, it’s about experiences that touch the heart and make us pause in delight for a moment.

The Thermen- & Vulkanland is a place where holidaymakers can stay active outdoors until well into autumn. Hikers have countless prospective themed routes to consider – wine is an obvious choice, being so omnipresent in the region and with so many enjoyable places to stop for refreshments.

Moving experiences

The 6.5 to 14 km long “Weinweg der Sinne” (“Wine Road of the Senses”) starts at the Gesamtsteirische Vinothek wine shop in St. Anna am Aigen, passes Hochstraden, and continues on to the Grenzlandhof and the 40 m high viewing platform situated on the Slovenian border. On the way, a “barrel tunnel”, a rose garden with wind chime and a “herb seat” are all charming places to take a break. The full route takes about four hours to walk.

The Klöcher Traminerweg loops around the famed wine town in a figure of eight, starting and finishing at the Klöcher Vinothek. The route takes around five hours and encompasses wonderful views and power spots, traditional wine taverns, vineyards, and the romantic ruins of Klöch castle.

In Bad Loipersdorf, the accessible “Wein-Erlebnis-Weg Bad Loipersdorf” (“Wine Experience Road”) can be explored in separate sections. “Wine rest spots” invite you to linger a while and sample regional products made by local businesses.

The remarkable Murauen, Austria’s second-largest floodplain landscape, offers plenty of space to get your legs pumping. In Halbenrain, the K13 Murauen Weg (Murau Road) showcases the sheer beauty of this natural UNESCO biosphere park.

In Bad Radkersburg, the Wasserweg  (Water Road) is an excellent way to discover the UNESCO biosphere park. It is a circular hiking trail that runs past two of the places where the River Mur has been widened.

In pursuit of pleasure

If love is in the air, the “Herzspur” themed trail in Bad Gleichenberg is the trail for you, with 12 stations all focusing on relationships. Highlights include a “love swing”, a labyrinth where you can help stop each other “going astray”, a “Herzlplatz” (heart-shaped square) by a lime tree chapel, and a heavenly “grazing garden”. The approximately three-hour hike begins in Bad Gleichenberg, meanders through the historical spa gardens, and then along the avenue of pagoda trees on the Rudorfkogel.

A good tip for foodie hikers is the Bad Blumauer “Schmankerlwanderung” (“Delicacy Trail”), which offers plenty to see, hear and of course taste.

The hiking network “Auf den Spuren der Vulkane” (“Chasing Volcanoes”) introduces guests to various different areas of the Thermen- & Vulkanland; the routes can be divided into day stages, each bewitching travellers with scenic wonders such as viewing points, idyllic chapels, romantic fountains and geomantic spots. The culinary factories dotted along the routes spotlight the region’s specialities, and together form a holistic network of delights that touches our heart and soul, and lifts our mood, a feeling that accompanies us every step of the way.
