The Via Artis Altaussee is a varied cultural hiking trail in the Ausseerland region, which runs like a red thread through the charming district of Fischerndorf. Between Loser, Lake Altaussee, and artists' residences, an impressive interplay of nature, art history, and alpine flair unfolds. The trail follows in the footsteps of great personalities who have inspired and shaped the Ausseerland region over decades.
As early as the 19th century, Archduke Johann recognized the beauty of the Ausseerland region. His court painters, such as Jakob Alt and Jakob Gauermann, captured impressive motifs in numerous watercolors and drawings. Later, other artists, poets, and composers joined them, making this unique cultural landscape their retreat.
Route of the Via Artis Altaussee
The hike begins in the spa gardens of Altaussee (Station I) and leads along the main road to the west, past the elementary school, then left to the lake – where Station II is located. After a few minutes' walk along the shore, Station III is reached at the Hotel Seevilla. The route continues along Brahms-Weg, past the church, and turns onto Adrian-Werburg-Promenade. Here, right by the lake, is Station IV, with views of the water and the surrounding mountains.
The trail then continues along the north shore, past the snack bar and the popular Kalßeneck bathing spot, before merging into Arneth-Weg. This natural path winds through the forest, is narrower and somewhat more challenging in places, but always easily walkable – sturdy shoes are recommended. After about 1.5 kilometers, you will reach Station V, which is dedicated to the artist Christl Kerry.
If you prefer a shorter route, you can take a shortcut from Kalvarienberg via the so-called “Kleiner Künstlerblick” (small artist's view) back to the parish church and the Altaussee spa gardens.
The longer route leads from Station V through the district of Posern, past picturesque houses and old villas. The road winds gently downhill back to the starting point at the Altaussee spa house.
