This versatile mountain bike tour in Ausseerland combines athletic off-road cycling with scenic diversity and leads through one of the most charming regions of the Salzkammergut. The route starts in the center of Bad Mitterndorf and runs as a generous loop via Grundlsee, Gößl, and Obersdorf back to the starting point. It is ideal for athletic MTB tourers who are looking for a nature experience on two wheels.
The route begins between the Reisinger bakery and the NKD, heading north. After crossing the narrow passage along the Salza, the path climbs gently on an asphalt road to the “Kochalmbauer.” After passing the barrier, the climb begins on a gravel forest road that winds steadily uphill.
A larger clearing leads to the Rechenplatz. Here, continue left towards Salzaalm, the highest point of the tour at around 1,200 meters above sea level. The surroundings offer sweeping views and tranquility, ideal for a short rest. Then begins the descent towards Grundlsee. Once in Gößl, the route follows the picturesque shore of Grundlsee to its beginning.
Continue along side roads to the district of Strassen near Bad Aussee and from there on to Kainisch. Take the R19 cycle path for a leisurely and steady climb back to Bad Mitterndorf. The tour combines sporty cycling in nature with impressive lake and mountain panoramas.
This tour is particularly recommended as part of a mountain bike vacation in Ausseerland. It can be easily extended or varied with other mountain bike routes in Ausseerland.
