Wanted: a cycling route for families that offers a bit of everything. Impressive architecture, museums, picturesque spots for a break, stunning landscapes and some water for a quick dip. Plus, alpine mountain landscapes, a scenic valley and some urban vibes. The solution: the Mürz Valley cycle path.
The 68-kilometre-long route starts in Mürzsteg and takes you (mostly) along the river Mürz, all the way to the historic Old Town of Bruck an der Mur.
Did you know? For most parts, the route is slightly downhill, making it a great choice for children and less experienced cyclists.

Route details
The scenic, varied Mürz Valley cycle path R5 starts in Mürzsteg. Follow the trail in an easterly direction, passing by the mighty rock faces of Mürzer Oberland Nature Park until you reach Neuberg an der Mürz. From there, continue towards Urani Freizeitteich, Kapellen and Mürzzuschlag, home to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Semmering railway. Good to know: This is also where the Semmering cycle path R 46 starts.
From Mürzzuschlag, head southwest until you reach Hönigsberg and Krieglach in Peter Rosegger‘s Waldheimat region. Continue towards Mitterdorf, Wartberg and Kindberg and keep on cycling along fields and forests until you reach Mürzhofen. Passing by Kapfenberg, the trail eventually takes you to the “Kornmesser city” of Bruck an der Mur.
You still haven’t got enough of cycling? Then how about taking the Mur cycle path in Bruck and cycling on towards Graz, the provincial capital of the green heart of Austria? To get back to your starting point, simply hop on the train.
