The little Gesäuse
reichenstein mountain group
While the Mount Hochtor often sets the wild tone, the Reichenstein group shows its somewhat gentler - but no less impressive - side. This is where alpine challenge meets scenic elegance. A mountain massif that doesn't have to be loud to make an impression.
At 2,265 meters, the Mount Reichenstein is the highest peak in this group. It is not quite as dramatic as the Mount Hochtor, but it should not be underestimated. Here too, surefootedness is required (climbing II), here too the air gets thinner, here too the heart beats a little faster on the ascent.
What makes this side of the Gesäuse so special is its rhythm. It's not just about being at the top - it's about being on the move. Over flower-filled alpine pastures, past rugged rocks, through fields of mountain pines and over ridges with great views. The paths are varied, the moods intense. Early morning mist, flickering sunlight, wind in the grasses - sometimes this is the real summit experience.
The Gesäuse is particularly diverse around the Reichenstein group. Here you can combine wild days in the great outdoors with enjoyable evenings in a mountain hut. The Mödlingerhütte is not only a perfect starting point for tours, but also a place to arrive, take a deep breath, stay and then hike on.
The Reichenstein group is a piece of the Gesäuse that speaks more quietly - but lingers all the longer. For all those who like to take their time. For all those who appreciate quiet sounds. And for all those who know that enjoyment sometimes begins steeply.
