Trans Nationalpark Et 04 (St.Gallen-Palfau)

Closed
Village hopping: via Weißenbach and Großreifling to Palfau - and lonely hills, forests and alpine pastures in between.
This stage starts with a downhill run - namely to the neighbouring village of Weißenbach. From there, tranquil forest roads take you above the Enns to the Wolfsbachgraben. Lonely forest roads through even more deserted wooded hills bring you in an up and down to the Erbsattel and further on via the car road down to the village of Großreifling. Now the trail climbs steadily back up to the alpine regions and along the southern slopes of the Gamsstein massif, finally descending to the small hamlet of Palfau.

Start at the main square of St. Gallen in front of the municipal office. The start of the stage takes you north out of the main square: you follow the road towards Weißenbach, but before the descent gets steeper, turn right into a smaller road that runs parallel. Soon a gravel path leads down diagonally to the left, which brings you back to the large road parallel above it.

You have now arrived in Weißenbach: Take the main road through the village; at the end of the houses, don't miss the turnoff to the right onto the small parallel road, which you follow for a short distance until you reach the Enns. Turn right across a bridge over a stream and continue along the small asphalt road past lonely farms and later above the Enns for quite a while until a forest road branches off sharply to the right. Follow this forest road for about 250 m along the Wolfsbachgraben, sometimes quite steeply, until you reach a saddle. Choose the forest road that branches off diagonally to the left and follow it for quite a while until you reach a sharp ridge. From here, the forest road continues downhill until you reach the Erbsattel, where you again meet a large asphalt road. Take this road to the left up to the highest point of the saddle and then - passing Kassegg Castle - roll downhill all the way to Großreifling.

At the crossroads at the beginning of the village, keep left downhill until you reach a large crossroads at the end of the village. Here, turn right onto the large road and follow it past a weir on the Salza River until you reach a gravel parking area on the right side of the road. Right here, on the other side of the road, a gravel road turns sharply left, which you follow uphill through a sharp bend to a fork in the forest road. Take the right-hand forest road, first briefly downhill and then in many serpentines up the mountain to another forest road junction at a small saddle. Turn into the right forest road and follow it along the slopes for quite a long time - first slightly downhill past a hunting lodge, then slightly uphill and finally downhill again - until you reach another saddle called "Gamssteinhals".

Now follow the left forest road along the slopes of the Gamsstein, slightly uphill past the Naturfreundehütte and at some point slightly downhill again to above the Moaralm and to another fork in the forest road. The right-hand forest road takes you downhill for a while until you turn diagonally right onto a smaller forest path that takes you down to Palfau in many serpentines.
