Nature Adventure Trail, Weiz

The nature adventure trail enables an intensive experience of the flora and fauna of the city of Weiz and its surroundings.
Along the 12.4 kilometer long circular trail, the richness and diversity of nature is presented by means of information boards. The hiker passes through very different cultural landscapes. Easily accessible hiking trails reveal the most diverse habitats, which offer numerous plant and animal species their place in the ecosystem. Starting from the main square in Weiz, you quickly leave the urban noise behind and after just a few meters you are immersed in the Hofstatt forest. This includes a forest nature trail, which offers an introduction to forest lore on several display boards. You are immersed in a suburban idyllic environment.

Numerous information boards describing flora and fauna line the entire path.

More information

The district capital of Weiz is located in eastern Styria and is very easy to reach via the A2 motorway from Vienna (approx. 2 hrs) and Graz (approx. 30 min).

Arrival from Vienna and from Graz:

On the A2 coming from Vienna and from Graz, take motorway exit 161 / Gleisdorf West in the direction of B54/B64. Follow the B65 / Gleisdorfer Bundesstraße until you reach the B54 / Wechselbundesstraße. At the roundabout, take the second exit north to the B64 / Rechberg-Bundesstraße. After approx. 15 km you will reach the city of Weiz.

Start: Taborkirche, Weiz main square
  • We start between the Taborkirche church and the town hall and walk up Hofstattgasse and then out to the right.
  • At the crossroads, we turn left and walk up to the estate houses.
  • There we keep left and turn into the "Tannenweg " ("private path, passage permitted until further notice").
  • We stay on the Tannenweg until it joins a hiking trail in the forest. Here we find the first information boards.
  • At the forest playground, we turn half-left uphill between the hut of the forest kindergarten and the play equipment (signposted "Der große Erlebniswald").
  • When we reach the rest area or the crossroads, we turn left onto the path. We are now in the forest and walk along a wooden path.
  • At the fork in the path, continue straight ahead on the narrow path and along the fence.
  • At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead along the path between the fence and the forest embankment.
  • We walk up to the asphalt road and turn left into the "Leitnerweg" and walk down towards "Göttelsberg".
  • We cross the main road and continue straight ahead.
  • The tarmac path ends at the forest and we follow the footpath to the next settlement.
  • Back on the asphalt path, we continue straight ahead, cross the road and continue straight ahead. We are now on the R11 cycle path.
  • We follow the road uphill until we come to the "Bärentalweg " entrance on the right. We now leave the road and continue along the gravel path.
  •  Soon in the forest and past a beautiful wayside shrine, we hike down through the Bärental valley to the Raab.

  • We turn right at the information board and are now in the Kleine Raabklamm gorge.

  • Only a short section of the trail, then we turn right (immediately after the large meadow) and walk along the edge of the meadow to the forest.

  • Once we reach the forest, we walk steeply uphill to the right until we reach the meadow.

  • We walk along the edge of the forest up to the road and turn left there.

  • We now walk along the road up to the village of "Hafning", keeping left at the two crossroads in the village.

  • We walk through the village and continue straight ahead at the village exit.

  • We continue along the asphalt road with a beautiful view until we reach the junction with the main road. We are now in "Göttelsberg".

  • We cross the main road and walk half right up through the settlement.

  • In the settlement, we turn right and are now right back at the main road.

  • We turn left and then immediately turn left again into the settlement. We walk up to the center of Göttelsberg.

  • At the traffic circle, we continue straight ahead along Schulweg.

  • We go straight on up the hill to "Göttelsberg-Dorf" and then follow the road out to the left. We are now looking directly at the Stross.

  • Shortly before the "Zattach" village sign, we turn right at the wayside chapel in the direction of "Weiz" and after just a few steps we see the entrance to the hiking trail on the right.

  •  We turn right here onto the "Waldlehrpfad ".

  • At the next crossroads in the forest at the "Vogelkirsche" (bird cherry), we continue to the right

  • At the next crossroads, we continue straight ahead and are now back on the path we already know from the way there.

  • We walk back down the wooden path, meet the gate again and continue along the fence or the "Great Adventure Forest".

  • We walk to the "Weiz Tabor" junction and turn left down into the forest.

  • At the rest area in the forest by the large hornbeam, we keep to the right and continue right at the next fork in the path.

  • We leave the forest and now have a direct view of the Weizbergkirche church, crossing a small meadow to reach the urban area again at "Stubenbergweg".

  • We walk down the Stuberbergweg and then turn right along the "Feldgasse" back to the Tabor church.

In the Kleine Raabklamm gorge, we hike directly along the banks of the Raab with beautiful resting and bathing spots, so bring a bathing suit and towel on hot days!
