Fishing at the Grundlsee

Grundlsee

The Grundlsee in the Ausseerland offers sport fishermen in Styria clear water, idyllic nature, and a diverse fish population – ideal for pike, perch, and chub anglers.

To fish at the Grundlsee, a valid fishing license is required. This can be purchased either at the Information Office Grundlsee or in the online shop of the Austrian Federal Forests.
Prerequisite is the possession of a valid guest fishing card or a fishing card from the Province of Styria.

The fishing season at the Grundlsee is limited in time and runs from May 15 to September 15, inclusive. During this period, fishing is restricted exclusively to the mentioned fish species.

Please note the applicable license terms:
Fishing regulations for the practice of angling in the waters of the Inner Salzkammergut forest operation.

The practice of angling in the waters listed below is only possible with a valid fishing license.

The legal requirement for acquiring these licenses is the possession of a fishing guest card or a fishing card for the state of Styria. The forest operation reserves the right to refuse applications for fishing licenses without providing reasons. Issued licenses will not be revoked.

Fish that are released must be handled as gently as possible. No throwing back – only gentle release! Caught fish must be transported dead.

Fishing in Grundlsee:
Minors from the age of 8 up to 14 years may fish without a fishing card, but only in the company and under the supervision of a legal guardian who holds a fishing card.

Observed license violations by other license holders must be reported immediately to the Grundlsee fishery or the fishing center. The provisions of the Styrian Fishing Act 2000 must be observed. The instructions of the sworn supervisory bodies must be strictly followed. Violations of these provisions will result in the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the fishing license without compensation.

The license holder is solely responsible for any damages or accidents of any kind, including those involving accompanying persons and children. ÖBf AG is only liable for damages caused by willful or gross negligence. The license holder indemnifies ÖBf AG against all claims from third parties in connection with this license agreement.

By acquiring a license, you expressly agree to our fishing regulations and commit to comply with them. Unused licenses lose their validity at the end of the respective year and cannot be transferred to the next year. No compensation for non-redeemed licenses.

Warning: Wading is dangerous. Use wading belts and appropriate footwear!

Good luck!

I. License Conditions for Grundlsee
PIKE FISHING LICENSES
The Grundlsee may be fished without inflows and without lake outflow – specifically excluded are the three year-round protected areas “Nursery for lake trout”:

Protected Area 1 - Area of the ÖBf fishing hut across the lake towards the Villa Castiglione boathouse

Protected Area 2 - Area from the Gößl boat landing to the swimming hut Wienern (entire estuary area of Toplitz and Stimitz streams)

Protected Area 3 - Area 50 meters left and right of the Zimitz mouth into the Grundlsee
These three protected areas were established to rebuild a good population of lake and brook trout in Grundlsee.

Pike Fishing Season: May 15 to September 15

Fishing Practice: Bank cards
For your own safety, be aware of potential rockfall hazards on the southern shore in the area of the Ressens.

Pike fishing may be conducted during daylight hours using two fishing rods with one hook each. Lures with treble hooks are allowed. The use of any type of fish finder is not permitted.

Only pikes, perch, and chub may be caught without limitation on numbers. Selling these is not allowed.

Catching LAKE and BROOK TROUT is prohibited! Should any be caught while pike fishing, they must be handled as gently as possible and released immediately. If possible, the hook should already be removed in the water, and the trout must not be tortured by unnecessary photography.

For pike fishing, lures such as spoons and wobblers of all kinds or dead bait fish (chub and perch - no salmonids) are permitted. Only fish from the Grundlsee may be used as bait fish. In the protected areas, fishing for bait fish is also not allowed.

A distance of 50 meters must be maintained from any catch devices set by professional fisheries.

When fishing only for perch, a free license is issued. This applies only to minors up to the age of 14. Perch fishing may also only take place under the supervision of an accompanying person.

There is no minimum catch length for pike fishing.

Holders of a seasonal license must keep a catch log, which is issued with the license. This must always be carried, and every kept fish caught, as well as caught salmonids that must be released, must be recorded.
For salmonids, a length estimate is sufficient. Perch do not need to be recorded.

All day or week license holders must maintain a catch statistic. Each fish must be recorded immediately after being caught.
