Altaussee is located in the northwestern part of the province of Styria.

The municipality belongs to the district of Liezen and consists of two castral municipalities with a total of five localities.

Area: 92 km²
Altitude: 712 m lake level of the Altaussee lake
Lake area: 214 ha
