from Vordernberg to Tragöß to "Grüner See"
Hike from the well-known cultural monument Radwerk IV in Vordernberg to the Styrian natural jewel Grüner See - which was voted Austria's most beautiful place in 2014.
The route hike from Vordernberg to Tragöß leads along paved roads and wide hiking trails. What at first seems rather unspectacular only becomes interesting on closer inspection. With Vordernberg, we get to know an important place in mining history - the Radwerk IV is the only preserved and fully equipped charcoal blast furnace in the world and therefore a first-class industrial monument (information:
www.radwerk-vordernberg.at). During the hike itself, we can concentrate on the surroundings, the forests, the rushing streams and, above all, on ourselves. The highest point of the tour is the pass from Tragöß to Trofaiach with the Hiaslegg inn - a popular starting point for many hikes. At the end of the hike, we reach the Grüner See, a special natural phenomenon, as the water level depends heavily on the amount of rainfall. (Info:

More information
On the S36 to Leoben; exit Leoben-West; B115 to Vordernberg.
Note: As this hiking tip is a long-distance hike, we recommend starting in Leoben or Bruck an der Mur. In both towns there are paid parking facilities near the train station.
We start in Vordernberg (839 m) and see the signpost for Hiaslegg near Radwerk IV. We follow the Rötzstraße under a railroad bridge and leave the populated area after just a few meters. The pilgrims' and hiking trail leads uphill along a gravel road - very steep in places. Shortly after the first clearing (vlg. Brandstetter) we reach the Hohe Rötz crossing (1064 m). We walk downhill along the road and continue straight ahead in a right-hand bend on the wide footpath and mountain bike trail, which leads downhill into the Rötzgraben. We follow the road for the next 300 meters to the pass crossing and the Hiaslegg inn (1154 m). We walk along the road in the direction of Tragöß until we see the signs on the left and take the hiking trail downhill. At the bottom of the valley, we walk past the Kreuzteich pond to the Grüner See lake (776 m) and the bus stop at the large parking lot.
This hike leads along the Mariazell Founders' Trail. The 192-kilometre pilgrimage trail can be walked in 7, 8 or 10 stages from St. Lambrecht to Mariazell.
From the train station in Leoben, we take bus number 820 to Vordernberg (journey time approx. 30 minutes).
The return journey is from the Grüner See parking lot (bus stop Tragöß-Oberort Grüner See) with line 175 to Bruck an der Mur (journey time approx. 40 minutes).
