Cerrini-Schlössl - Impression #1

Cerrini-Schlössl

Graz

The Cerrini-Schlössl is a residential building with a flat roof on the eastern slope of the Schlossberg, which was built by the architect and master builder Josef Withalm on behalf of Carl Freiherr von Cerrini in 1820. In 1809, Cerrini had commanded the defence of the exposed Burghers’ Bastion, for which he was given permission to erect the building on the south-eastern corner of the bastion as a reward. The building closed the breach that had been blown into the Burghers’ Bastion when the fortress was razed. It was restored by the City of Graz between 1995 and 1997. It serves as a place to live and work for holders of the one-year ‘Writer of the City of Graz’ scholarship and artists under threat in their home countries.
