► Agriculture
136,000 hectares in Steiermark will are used as farmland in 2020. Of the 80,000 cows kept in Styria, 595,397 tonnes of milk were milked in 2020. There are only more chickens (over 5 million) than cattle (over 300,000) in Steiermark.
► Bioenergy
In Styria, there are over 500 larger and smaller biomass heating plants that provide heat for heating buildings and hot water via district heating networks.
► Cultural Events
Aufsteirern, Diagonale, Styrian Autumn, Styriarte and the Long Table of the Capital of Pleasure are just a small selection of the cultural events Steiermark has to offer.
►Design
Not only the title UNESCO City of Design describes the fact that design is written in capital letters in Steiermark, but also the annual Design Month Graz, where innovative design projects and events are presented.
► Education
Over 150,000 pupils and 55,000 students complete their education in Steiermark and over 300,000 participants attend adult education courses at WIFI Steiermark.
► Fruit cultivation
Almost 128.000 tons of fruit were harvested in Steiermark in 2023, 92 percent of which was pome fruit. On average, Austrians consume between 18 and 19 kilograms of apples per capita (including drinks). That's 114 apples per year and capita.
► Green technology
Steiermark is also a pioneer when it comes to green innovations: Green Tech Valley is home to over 600 green technologies and services for renewable energies and the circular economy.

With the smartphone chips from AT&S, the fiber optic production systems from Rosendahl Nextrom, a subsidiary of the Styrian Knill Group, are also important worldwide. In 2021, the gross regional product generated in Steiermark in 2021 amounted to 51.6 billion euros.

Steiermarks international status is shown by its exports € 29 billion were exported in 2022 - most to our German neighbors, followed by the United States.
► Joanneum
Austria's oldest universal museum, the Joanneum, has been collecting evidence of the history, art, culture and nature of the province of Steiermark since 1811.
► Koralm railway
From the big city to the lake district in under an hour - this will be possible from 2025. The Koralm Railway will create a direct train connection between Graz and Klagenfurt.
► Local cuisine
Steiermark has plenty to offer: From the much-loved pumpkin seed oil to the delicious scarlet runner beans, wine and horseradish to apples. Incidentally, around 80 percent of all Austrian apples are produced in Steiermark.
► Mobility industry
One in four euros is generated in the mobility industry in Steiermark, with over 300 companies and 70,000 employees generating around €17 billion annually.
► Nature
A difference in altitude of 5,838 meters separates the highest point, the Dachstein massif at 2,995 meters, and the lowest in Rogner Bad Blumau, where a healing spring bubbles up from a depth of 2,843 meters.
► Organic farming
More than 4000 Styrian farmers adhere to the organic guidelines of BIO Austria. Steirerland Gemüse was certified according to the International Food Standards back in 2005.
► Patents
Almost nine patents a week are registered with the patent office from Steiermark. AVL List alone registered 211 patents in 2023, which is more than the six companies ranked below it combined.
► Quality of life
96.7% of those surveyed in 2019 like living in Steiermark. Sufficient jobs, an attractive research and development location and a sense of home are associated with Steiermark.
► Reserch and development location
With a regional R&D ratio of 5.17% of GDP, Styria remains by far the number one research state in Austria. Numerous research facilities give Styria an unmistakable profile as a centre of science..
► Startups
418 start-ups have been founded in Steiermark since 2011, which is 12 percent of all start-ups in Austria, making Steiermark one of the largest start-up regions in the country.
► Technology
20 global technology leaders, such as Andritz AG, work in Green Tech Valley with 2,300 researchers to implement by now 600 green technology solutions.
► UNESCO
Steiermark is home to 220,551 pieces of folk music heritage and 48 intangible cultural heritage entries, including knowledge about the Lipizzaner horses and the "Öblaner Krampusspiel".
► Vacation
More than half of Austrians spend their vacations in Austria, with Steiermark being the number one destination, with around 29 percent of those surveyed stating that they go to Steiermark on vacation in the summer.
► Wood industry
61.4 percent of Steiermark is covered by forest. There are a good 850 million trees in it, if you were to convert that to the Styrian population, every Styrian would have 700 trees.
► Xenial
The word “xenial” means as much as hospitable. Hospitality is an important part of Styrian culture and it is no coincidence that Steiermark is the most popular travel destination for Austrians.
► Young professionals
The dual training system allows young people to gain a qualification alongside vocational training, which can then be used to study in the same way as a high school diploma.
► Zither
Around 1890, zither maker Johann Jobst from Graz was the first to build the air resonance concert zither, a concert zither with a small additional sound hole in the peghead, for which he was granted a patent in 1905.
