We leave the historic town of Murau, with its castle and the
Brewery of the Senses, via the station quarter – home to the terminal of the
nostalgic steam train, which still runs through the Mur Valley. The Mur Cycle
Path curves to the left here, joins the main road briefly, and continues on a
dedicated bike path.
Before reaching Triebendorf, the route veers away from the
road again and crosses the Mur River near the Triebendorf stop. From here, it’s
a relaxed ride through Frojach to Teufenbach, where we reach the “Raddörfl” – a
popular meeting spot for Mur cyclists. Just above Teufenbach are two notable
castles: the Steinschloss ruins, the highest-altitude castle ruins in Styria,
and Castle Alt-Teufenbach.
In the village, turn left at the first main road near
Gasthof Nemeth, then right after the town hall and the Raiffeisenbank, passing
the church to continue on toward Scheifling. The path leads through a scenic
forest on a well-maintained gravel track. After just a few kilometers, the
church tower of Scheifling comes into view.
This town was once a key crossroads of ancient trade routes,
which is still reflected in its historic layout. At the intersection just past
the church, we turn left, pass under the main road, and cross the Mur
pedestrian bridge to the left bank. After also crossing the Murtalbahn railway,
we arrive in Lind bei Scheifling, where the Freisambad natural swimming pond
offers a welcome refreshment. From here, we continue along the tracks of the
Murtalbahn toward Unzmarkt-Frauenburg – the starting (or ending) point of this
historic railway.
We ride on to St. Georgen ob Judenburg, where those young at
heart can take a detour to visit the Fairy Tale Forest – a refreshing
experience for all ages. At this point, we turn right and follow a pleasant,
easy route nestled between the river and the railway.
Soon, we reach Thalheim, and continue along the left bank of
the Mur toward Judenburg, the final stop of today’s stage. After passing under
the motorway bridge, the stress of daily life feels far behind us.
Just before entering the town, a short uphill section awaits
– but it’s worth the effort. The old town of Judenburg is remarkably well
preserved and full of charm. Its landmark is the nearly 76-meter-tall city
tower, offering panoramic views over the Aichfeld region. Construction began in
the 15th century, and the tower originally served as a fire watchtower. Its
current form dates back to 1840, following a major fire. Today, at 50 meters
up, the tower houses one of Europe’s most modern planetariums.
In the heart of the old town, the Puch Museum invites
visitors to explore key milestones of Austrian vehicle history. Legendary
bicycles, motorcycles, and cars bring the world-famous Puch brand to life – a
name that played a central role in Austria’s motorization.
