Via the Malleistenalm to the Kaarlalm in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park

An extensive forest, meadow and mountain pasture hike, in summer with refreshment stops at the Malleistenalm and occasionally at the Kaarlhütte. Not difficult, but also quite long, sometimes a little sparsely marked.

From Arzbachgraben (this starts in Neuberg an der Mürz and leads around 5 kilometres into the valley to the ‘Poar’ farmstead - P here), the trail leads through forests that are wonderfully colourful, especially in autumn, to the Nikolokreuz (ascent here is also possible from Krieglach). The trail continues in an easterly direction via the inviting Malleistenalm, which is open in summer, and the wooded Roßkogel to the Kaarlalm (hut, only open in autumn).

A short summit stage awaits here on the Kreuzschober (summit cross) before returning to the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park in Neuberg / Arzbach along the ascent route.

More information

From the P in the rear Arzbachgraben, follow a wide, signposted path past the ‘Poar’ farmstead, keeping right across a meadow up to the edge of the forest. Here the wide path turns into an easy forest path, alternating with sections of forest road and with beautiful views of the Schneealm, leading to the Nikolokreuz (crossroads). Now keep left through partly dense forest to the Malleistenalm (alpine inn, mountain bike meeting point).

Here, follow the hiking trail (somewhat sparsely marked in places, as of autumn 2020) first to the east, then to the north and, from the wooded Roßkogel, back to the east until the path from Hönigsberg meets our hiking trail from the right. Continue straight ahead to reach the Kaarlalm (hut, partially inhabited).

Here you have the opportunity to climb the Kreuzschober (summit cross) in around 15 minutes.

Return to the starting point via the ascent path.

A visit to Neuberg Abbey with the Neuberger Münster, the Nature Museum, and the Kaiserhof Glass Manufactory is highly recommended.
