Seeberg Cycle Path R13

Partially opened
From the Mürz Valley through the Hochschwab region into the Mariazellerland. A cycling route that appeals to tour riders and requires a good level of fitness. Breathtaking mountain views and landscape features make up for the effort.

The current development level is more suited for tour riders who are used to busy main roads. The Seeberg also requires a good level of fitness. From Kapfenberg to Thörl, the narrow Mariazeller Bundesstraße with a perfect cycling path leads into the Thörlgraben. Only after Palbersdorf does the valley widen, and the Aflenzer Land plateau is reached. Cyclists with less endurance should consider ending the tour in Seewiesen.

For those wanting to continue to Mariazell, the climb to the Seebergsattel begins in Seewiesen—with a 12% incline; now, fitness is key! The impressive view of the Hochschwab mountains and the anticipation of the descent make up for the small efforts. The descent leads to Gollrad, and from there, the cycling path takes you to Wegscheid and then to Gußwerk. Finally, there’s an uphill stretch to the destination, the famous pilgrimage town of Mariazell.

More information

Via S35 or S6, exit: Kapfenberg

From Kapfenberg to Thörl, we cycle leisurely up the valley on a perfect bike path. The route takes us through Thörlgraben, past the picturesque Aflenz, and reaches the Seebacher ponds. After that, we ride along the beautifully designed pass road over the Styrian Seeberg, which connects the Mürz Valley with Mariazell. This section follows the Mariazeller Bundesstraße B20, which we must share with trucks, cars, and motorcycles. The traffic distribution varies depending on the day and time.

Upon reaching the Seebergsattel at 1,254 meters, it’s all downhill from there to Gußwerk, and the final stretch to Mariazell is a bit more challenging. But the effort is well worth it.

Here, a stop is definitely worth it:

  • Schachenstein Castle Ruins in Thörl
  • Enjoy a coffee in the idyllic holiday resort of Aflenz, and consider a visit to the Erde-Funkstelle Aflenz.
  • The Seebach Leisure Ponds and Erlaufsee are also great spots to take a break and provide a refreshing cool down.
