Waltrafelsen Sankt Anna am Aigen

St. Anna/Aigen

The "Waltrafelsen" is a steep basalt wall that rises at the edge of the high plateau of the Stradnerkogel in Sankt Anna am Aigen. In addition to the large boulders scattered at the foot of the basalt wall, you can find caves there.

The Waltrafelsen is a steep basalt wall on the Stradner Kogel, which at 609 meters is the highest elevation in the area. A narrow cave entrance leads about 50 meters deep into the interior of this rocky landscape. This cave was demonstrably inhabited long before Christ.

The evidence for this was found by Karl Handler in 1929, when he climbed into the ground up to eleven meters below the existing rock slabs and found a beautiful bowl, which archaeologists assign an age of about 5,000 years. According to the reports, it was during this period that the basalt wall collapsed, the rocks of which buried the settlement.
