Roman Age Museum Ratschendorf
Our museum was once a cold store. Today it is a place of encounter with archaeology, history and building culture.
Research, preservation and education are just as much part of the DNA of our museum, which opened on 6 May 1990, as sustainability, inclusion and participation. In Ratschendorf, a vacant former "cold store", built by the village community and no longer in use, was saved from demolition and now "lives on", analogous to its original function as a meeting place for the village community, as a place where archaeology, history and culture meet with and for visitors to the museum.
A walk-in(!), full-size reconstructed Roman burial mound
The centre of the museum space is occupied by a walk-in, full-size reconstructed Roman burial mound with its five burials. The artefacts on display, including terra sigillata and glass vessels, come from the Roman Age burial ground "Hügelstaudach", which is located in the immediate vicinity of the museum, and the exhibition is impressively complemented by graphics and information panels. The awarding of architectural prizes such as the "GerambRose" (formerly the "Geramb-Dankzeichen für Gutes Bauen") and other accolades honours the successful and uncompromising implementation - and thus also timeless and still valid quality - of monument preservation and architectural, archaeological, didactic, artistic and social concerns and concepts.
Tip 1: Visit the small Roman burial mound "Hügelstaudach" just 1 km south of the museum.
Tip 2, recommendation: If you book in advance, you can book a guided tour of the museum. In addition, if you have the time and inclination, you can take a hike from the museum to the burial mounds, visit the "Wäsch" or the "Jahnwald" forest, which is a nature reserve, the small pilgrimage church Maria Helfbrunn and much more. Opening hours and the key to the museum:
Our museum is open when the Dorfwirt is open.
Why? Because we think that a combination of culture, which can be experienced here through a visit to the museum, hospitality and culinary delights make for a good whole and a wonderful day.
Palm Sunday-All Saints' Day Thu-Mon 10:00-18:00
