Freshly Roasted in the Midst of Vineyards
Although the Thermal and Volcanic Region of Styria is considered the stronghold of food processing in Austria, until recently, no one had bothered with beans from Central America, Africa, or Indonesia. Aleksandra Piecak-Maitz and Franz Maitz have now changed that. In the midst of the vineyards in Frutten-Gießelsdorf near Sankt Anna am Aigen, the two process green coffee beans in their in-house manufactory.
The highland Arabica beans come from a wholesaler in Hamburg, who sources them from Nicaragua, Sumatra, and Ethiopia, and they are refined into a very special blend using the drum roasting method in the coffee roastery. How did it all begin? As is often the case, it started with a dream. In 2016, the two fulfilled their dream of coffee roasted in their own small manufactory.
This is marketed under the name Maitz Kaffee in regional catering businesses, some supermarkets, and of course on site. A visit on-site is definitely worthwhile, as excellent coffee is accompanied by cakes and pastries. There is also a plan for the future: they want to slowly grow with the product and build a transparent manufactory in the coming years.
