Lesung zur Adventfenstereröffnung mit Franzobel in Fehring
FehringOne Hundred Words for Snow
After "The Raft of the Medusa" and "The Conquest of America," Franzobel tells the adventurous story of the conquest of the North Pole in "One Hundred Words for Snow." In the fall of 1897, the American explorer and adventurer Robert Peary brings six Inughuit, the name of the people living in northern Greenland, to New York on a steamship. They are to be examined, but above all, exhibited and showcased. Four of them quickly die of tuberculosis, one is sent back – but the nine-year-old Minik remains.
His story – baptism, school, fraudulent foster father, escape – makes headlines. In Franzobel's novel, Minik becomes a pawn between the civilized American culture and that of a supposedly primitive indigenous people. His fate is a heroic song about the struggle for survival of a nearly extinct people that has proven how humans can survive even in the most inhospitable areas.
