When Gossendorf becomes the "Nativity Village" in Advent, magic is in the air. Escape the hectic everyday life and experience the unique Gossendorf Nativity Trail – a highlight for families, hiking enthusiasts, and culture lovers. Over a picturesque circular route of about five kilometers, visitors discover more than 50 lovingly crafted nativity scenes. From December 1st until January 6th (Epiphany), the path is freely accessible and leads through the idyllic landscape around Höchkogel.
Each nativity scene tells its own story and impresses with creativity and craftsmanship. Natural materials such as roots, moss, wood, chestnuts, or hay transform into true works of art. Highlights include the barrel nativity scene, the floating nativity scene, a Baroque nativity scene, and the unique "Geo-Caching" nativity scene that can only be found via GPS.
How it works: On the website www.geocaching.com, treasure seekers receive the coordinates for this very special nativity scene. Equipped with a GPS device or smartphone, they set off on their search. Those who discover the nativity scene can traditionally enhance it with small items – a fun activity for the whole family and a special highlight for geocaching fans.
Also particularly popular are the stable nativity scene with live animals and the wine farm nativity scene. The Gossendorf Nativity Trail is considered unique in Styria, possibly even in all of Austria. The nativity scene builders invest much time and passion into each individual work – a true community project that attracts visitors from near and far.
Clearly marked with a star and "R", the path leads safely to the artworks. Those wishing to experience the magic at dusk should bring a lantern or flashlight.
