In a psychiatric institution on the outskirts of Vienna, primary physician Siegfried Lobell collects the most exciting cases. From his patients in Pavilion 44, he hopes to gain insights into the enigma that is man, the strange state of the world and the most obscure mystery of all - himself. When two of his patients disappear, Lobell also sets off for Vienna's city centre. What he finds are lots of crazy people, but not the two of them. A visit from the writer Aliza Berg, who takes up residence in Lobell's Pavilion 44 as a guest for a recherche, doesn't make things any better ...
