Waldglashütte
St. Stefan ob StainzBranch Archeo Norico Burgmuseum Deutschlandsberg Museum Waldglashütte
The uniquely preserved ruins of a former glassworks belonging to the canon monastery of Stainz are located on the Glaserwiese at an altitude of 1125 m above sea level. The main furnace, which was archaeologically excavated in 2011, is one of the most important monuments to early modern glass production in Austria due to its excellent state of preservation.
A museum and protective building made entirely of wood provides an insight into glass production in the 17th century.

Visit also our freely accessible branch in Greisdorf with the historical Waldglashütte on the Glaserwiese (8563 Sommereben, Fallegg 28 - near Gasthof and Hotel "Klugbauer").
For centuries, the Koralpen region was an important centre of glassworks in Styria. In the Greisdorf / Reinischkogel area, targeted research has succeeded in locating several previously unknown early forest glassworks sites. The most impressive excavation site is located on the so-called "Glaserwiese" in Sommereben at a good 1125 m above sea level. The museum building of the glassworks on the Glaserwiese near vlg. Klugbauer is situated on a foothill of the Reinischkogel and was built directly above the still impressive ruins of the smelting and lehr furnace and a secondary furnace.
This field name, which has been passed down through generations, was also the decisive factor for archaeological excavations by the castle museum Archeo Norico Deutschlandsberg in 2011. Finally, the uniquely preserved ruins of a former glassworks of the Augustinian canons' monastery of Stainz were uncovered.
The glassworks was in operation for over 40 years (from approx. 1620 - 1660). Due to their good structural condition, the furnaces of the glassworks are among the most important monuments of early modern glass production in Austria.
