Parish church of St James with chancel
Geistthal-SödingbergThe parish church of St James is visited by many pilgrims who walk the West Styrian Way of St James.
The history of St James' Church dates back to the middle of the 13th century. This Gothic building is surrounded by a walled cemetery.
The charnel house, which is located directly next to the church, was restored in 2007 and now serves as a chapel of rest. This ossuary is a romantic two-storey round building. Baroque wall paintings were also discovered in this building during the restoration work.
Incidentally, the parish and the municipality have different spellings of the place name. While the municipality of Geistthal uses the variant with a silent h, the parish of Geisttal dispenses with this consonant.
