Parish church of St. Johann near Herberstein
FeistritztalPatrocinium of St. John the Baptist
In the early 12th century, a Romanesque hall church was built, which was named Feistritz as the seat of a mother parish in 1170. Numerous Romanesque gravestones were inserted into the church walls and have survived to the present day.
The Augustinian monastery, founded in 1652, was subsequently an important source of spiritual inspiration for the central Feistritz Valley.
The current parish church was structurally completed in 1659 and the interior was renovated in several stages until 1713. After the abolition of the monastery in 1820, the adjoining monastery building was used for various purposes and has housed the House of Women since 1981.
