Parish Church Wenigzell
WenigzellThe Wenigzell parish church is the heart of the community!
The Wenigzell parish church is a popular place of pilgrimage for pilgrims passing through on their way to Mariazell. It is dedicated to St. Margaret and St. Margaret's Day (July 20) is also celebrated every year with a music festival.
The village of "Zell" with the chapel of St. Margaret is first mentioned in a document from Vorau Abbey in 1209. In the second half of the 17th century, Wenigzell was a popular place of pilgrimage for farmers who prayed to St. Patrizius for good luck in the stable. Work then began on enlarging the church, which was consecrated in 1735. It was a magnificent rococo church, which unfortunately fell victim to the flames on April 19, 1945.
Reconstruction and decoration in the neo-baroque style began slowly. The only artistically modern piece is a baptismal font made of serpentinite, with a basin in the shape of an octahedron, designed by the Graz artist Wolfgang Rahs.
