12.12.2025 Rattener Advent – towards Christmas: "Mettenschicht" at the mining museum
Mettenschicht – revived tradition from the time of mining
The so-called "Mettenschicht" is a very old tradition of miners. It was the last shift before Christmas, where the miners gathered together. The name refers to the Christmas mass following the last worked shift. There was traditional food and a ceremonial devotion.
Together, the mining museum and the music association Ratten organize this traditional pre-Christmas event. The area between the musicians' house and the mining museum appears - decorated with a lighted Christmas tree, open fire, and string lights - in pre-Christmas splendor.
This historical 'shift', the second since the end of mining in Ratten and St. Kathrein/H. in 1960, is accompanied by the miners' music and enriched with texts and thoughts by Christine Baumgartner and Franz Mögle.
Culinarily, one sticks to tradition. There will be apple or dried fruit bread and the popular Mettenjause, a lentil stew with sausages.
