Schaubergwerk Museum Oberzeiring
PölstalThe show mine in Oberzeiring is a significant cultural monument that provides deep insight into the rich history of silver mining in Styria.
The show mine in Oberzeiring offers a fascinating insight into the rich history of silver mining in Styria. Evidence of silver mining in this area dates back to around 1000 BC. The first documented mention of the mine dates back to 1267. In the Middle Ages, Oberzeiring was known for its significant silver mine, which was one of the oldest and largest in the Eastern Alps.
Mining significantly contributed to the upswing of Styria, but ended at the latest in the 1370s. A legend reports of a catastrophic water influx that is said to have "drowned" the mine. Today, visitors can walk through the old tunnels and see clay vessels, mine lamps, and minerals in the museum. The show mine is a unique testimony to medieval mining and was awarded the Austrian Museum Quality Seal in 2018.
