Murau

Of the Romanesque basilica of St. Egidi, the oldest branch church of the parish of Murau, the central nave with the round apse is still preserved today. After the partial destruction at the end of the 12th century, the side aisles were added in Gothic style and at the same time the ceiling level of the middle section was lowered.

On the area of the cemetery around the church, a mortuary was built in a contemporary wooden structure, which represents a wooden world object. This wooden laying out hall has been awarded the Geramb sign of thanks and the Styrian timber construction award!

From the previous Romanesque building to St. Aegydius, the oldest branch church in Murau, only has the central nave with its round apse. After being partially destroyed at the end of the 12th century, the side aisles were added in Gothic style and at the same time the ceiling level of the middle section was lowered. Today's flat ceiling with stencil painting dates from around 1500. Over the arcades of the south aisle are frescoes from the 14th century. Scenes from the life of Mary and the martyrdoms of the saints have been preserved. The high altar and pulpit are part of the baroque furnishings. In the summer / autumn of 2002 the interior of the Aegidi Church was renovated down to the smallest detail, making it one of Murau's jewels.
