Lipizzaner Stud Farm Tour

On the trail of the Lipizzaners! This cycling tour brings you up close to the famous white horses, with several opportunities to observe these noble animals roaming freely in nature.

Starting at the Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber, this cycling route leads to the outer farms Kampl, Wilhelm, and Reinthaler, where young mares and stallions are prepared for their summer grazing on the Glein and Stubalpe pastures. From September to June, you have a very good chance of spotting the young spirited horses up close in the meadows of the outer farms. Information panels along the way offer insights into the daily lives of these noble animals.

This short but hilly cycling loop takes you through a well-maintained cultural landscape and offers stunning panoramic views across the Lipizzaner homeland. Two steep climbs provide a sporty challenge, especially for riders without electric support.

Along the way, traditional inns and rustic wine taverns (*Buschenschänken*) invite you to take a break, and in summer, the Schlossbad in Bärnbach offers a welcome opportunity to cool off.

The Kampl foal stable, not far from the main stud farm, is home to the older foals.

At the Wilhelm farm (Schachnerweg), the one- to three-year-old young Lipizzaner stallions are housed from mid-September to mid-June. In summer, these “young wild ones” spend their time on the Stubalm near the Soldatenhaus, close to the Altes Almhaus.

At the Reinthaler farm in Kohlschwarz, the one- to three-year-old young Lipizzaner mares are housed from mid-September to mid-June. In summer, the young mares move up to the Gleinalm pastures at the Brendl-Stadl.

Of course, no cycling tour in this region would be complete without a visit to the stud farm and Piber Castle, where you can learn all about the breeding, care, and training of the world-famous white horse royalty.

Train connection: S7 Graz – Köflach, Köflach train station; 1.7 km to the tour start, Therme NOVA and the turnoff to Schachnerweg. Bicycles can be taken on the train free of charge.
