Lipizzanerheimat and Steirische Rucksackdörfer
hiking in the west of graz
In summer, the west attracts visitors with reservoirs and summit ascents - in winter with snowshoe tours, cross-country skiing and snowy winter hikes.
The Packalpe and Stubalpe mountains border Carinthia and are known above all for their magnificent high alpine pastures, rock formations (ovens) and panoramic views over large parts of Styria and as far as Carinthia and Slovenia. The hospitable huts and inns in the region and along the north-south long-distance hiking trail are also popular. Well-known peaks include the Stubalm-Speikkogel (1,993 m), the Hirschegger Alm and the Rappoldkogel.
Those not looking for summit conquests will find easy walking and hiking trails around the Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber and the NOVA Köflach thermal spa, following in the footsteps of the Lipizzaners. Bärnbach and Voitsberg also offer beautiful circular trails and very popular in summer are hikes at the romantic Hirzmannsperre dam, Packer reservoir and around the small Hebalmsee lake.
From the Hebalm, the areas around the Großofen and Reinischkogel as well as the wine-growing areas near Ligist border the alpine pasture and summit regions of the Styrian Rucksackdörfer and the Lipizzanerheimat in the southwest.
