Our tour along the Mur Cycle Path begins in the Hohe Tauern National Park, heading east. Passing the golf course, the route leads us through St. Margarethen and on to Unternberg. A general tip for the entire journey: there’s so much to discover along – and just off – the path. It’s well worth taking the time to stop and explore the cultural and natural treasures Austria has to offer. Moosham Castle, for example, is just a short detour from the trail and makes for a fascinating cultural pause. Afterwards, we rejoin the Mur Cycle Path and continue toward Tamsweg, where we’re greeted just beforehand by the small pilgrimage church St. Leonhard. In the late Middle Ages, it was one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Austria, second only to Mariazell.
From here, the route follows the former Murtalbahn railway line into the center of Tamsweg – a perfect opportunity to refill supplies before continuing.
We then ride a few easy, relaxed kilometers to Ramingstein, where Finstergrün Castle towers above the village. The route continues via Predlitz – where we officially enter Styria – and then to Stadl an der Mur. A new underpass and a wooden arch bridge across the Mur welcome cyclists here.
Looking to cool off? The Stadl bathing lake is perfect for a refreshing break. From there, we cycle on to St. Ruprecht ob Murau, where a sign points us toward the Wood Museum – a highlight of the local Murau Wood World. With more than 90 interactive stations, it’s clear that being “on the wood path” doesn’t always mean going the wrong way! Here, you’ll experience nearly every aspect of this natural raw material.
The Mur Cycle Path continues toward St. Lorenzen ob Murau, accompanied by the scenic narrow-gauge railway. We approach Kreischberg, one of Austria’s most popular winter sports areas – but also worth a visit in summer. You can check the operating times of the cable car [here].
The final stretch of this stage brings us into the center of Murau, where we’re greeted by the Brewery of the Senses. In addition to its famous Murauer beer, the town of Murau offers a rich cultural program in the summer months. Culture and culinary delights – a perfect mix for cyclists.
Still feeling energetic? A rewarding detour leads to St. Lambrecht Abbey in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park. Be warned, though – this route involves some serious climbing. But those who make the effort are well rewarded at the top.
