Code of conduct on Styrian alpine pastures

Hikes in the green heart of Austria are exciting and relaxing at the same time. With around 1,900 alpine pastures covering a total area of 146,000 hectares, Styria offers plenty of space to enjoy nature. Following the rules of conduct for staying safe on alpine pastures, all visitors can enjoy their outdoor excursions to the fullest. So please observe and consider the following when you are out and about with your four-legged friend:

  1. Keep a safe distance and do not feed the animals.
  2. Keep calm so as not to frighten the animals.
  3. The mother cows protect their calves. Please keep dogs away from them.
  4. Dogs must be kept on a lead. In the event of an attack, immediately let go of the lead.
  5. Avoid unnecessary risks and only use marked trails.
  6. Give way to grazing animals and wait until they have left the trail. Keep as much distance as possible.
  7. If animals approach, simply keep calm and do not turn your back on them.
  8. If the atmosphere is tense, leave the grazing area of the animals as quickly as possible.
  9. Observe demarcated areas and close all gates behind you when crossing pastures.
  10. Treat nature, alpine workers and animals with respect.
