A day in Knittelfeld - culture, culinary delights and little treasures

  • 3 minutes of reading time
Knittelfeld surprises - charming, lively and with a lot of history. Spend a day in this town and immerse yourself in the diversity between tradition and modernity.

Perfect start into the day

Our day in Knittelfeld begins at the Gewerkenschlössl, a jewel of the town's history. Surrounded by an idyllic park, the Schlössl not only impresses with its architecture, but also with its excellent breakfast. Here we fortify ourselves for the exciting day ahead.

In the Gewerkenschlössl you can also spend the night in stately comfort.

Enjoy regionally

After a hearty breakfast, we make our way to the Knittelfeld farmers' market. It smells of fresh bread, regional cheese, seasonal vegetables and many other Styrian specialties. We taste our way through the assortment and enjoy pleasant conversations with the producers here and there. Here, enjoyment is very close to the people. The farmers' market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday from 7 am to 12 noon on the main square in Knittelfeld.

Of course, after the visit, a coffee in one of the pubs on the main square is a great idea.

Relax in the park

The beautiful weather invites us to enjoy the sunshine, so we decide to take a walk in the city park. Here we can relax and unwind on the Murtal lounger.

Strengthening is a must

We enjoy lunch at the Bachwirt. This traditional restaurant spoils us to the highest level. From traditional home cooking to modern and healthy bowls, nothing is left to be desired here.

On the trail of history

In the afternoon, culture is on the agenda - the Knittelfeld Railway Museum. With great attention to detail, it shows the eventful history of railroads in the region. Old locomotives, historic uniforms and model trains bring the romance of the railroad to life - and it's not just children's eyes that light up when the miniature trains make their rounds. In the simulator, we can step into the shoes of a train driver and enjoy a refreshment in the dining car. The Railway Museum is currently hosting a special exhibition about the Lavantalbahn, which has connected the Murtal and Lavantal valleys for decades.

Milk - the white gold

The Obersteirische Molkereien have stood for top quality and regional ties for decades. Of course, we won't miss out on a visit here. Based in Knittelfeld, they process fresh milk from local family farms every day - sustainably, fairly and with great care. The range extends from fresh milk and yogurt to award-winning cheese specialties. Traditional craftsmanship meets modern processing - for real taste from Styria. Guided tours can be booked on request and, of course, tastings are also available. Don't miss out on this experience.
