Mariazell Lahnsattel Mürzsteg

Wonderful, winding tour with refreshing relaxation in between at Lake Erlaufsee - biker hearts beat faster!

This HOCHsteirische route leads from Mariazell over the Niederalpl to Mürzsteg, over the Lahnsattelbundesstraße and the beautiful Erlaufsee back to Mariazell. Lake Erlaufsee is a mountain lake at the foot of the Gemeindealpe not far from the village of Mitterbach am Erlaufsee. The border between Lower Austria and Styria runs through the lake. In the summer months, you can reach the lake from Mariazell with the Mariazell-Erlaufsee Museum Tramway, which is operated with historic steam streetcar sets. It has a natural swimming beach on the southern shore (gravel). The Erlauf River flows through the lake. The great abundance of fish in the lake includes perch, pike, char, rudd, brown trout and rainbow trout.

On the shore there is a restaurant, a snack station, a camping site, a boat rental and a diving school. Round trips with excursion boats are also offered at the lake. The Erlaufsee should not be confused with the Erlaufstausee, which is about 4.5 km away, downstream from the Erlauf.

Starting from the pilgrimage site Mariazell (motorcycle and active hotel Weißer Hirsch), we follow the Mariazellerstraße (B20) to Wegscheid and then continue our route on the (L113) to the Niederalpl (1229m) a great, smooth motorcycle route, to Mürzsteg.

There we continue on the Lahnsattelbundesstraße (B23) over the Lahnsattel (1027m), the Lahnsattel is a scenic route through the Kalkalpen and further to the Terz, here we turn right towards Gscheid, where we then turn left onto the (L101) onto the Ulreichsberg to Sägemühle on the Mariazellerstraße. Continuing on the Mariazellerstraße we pass the Erlaufstausee and St. Sebastian and return to the pilgrimage town of Mariazell. In Mariazell, a stop at the Pirker is recommended. A good coffee and a gingerbread to go with it. A Mariazell gingerbread is also a perfect souvenir to take home.

The federal road B23 over the Lahnsattel connects Frein an der Mürz with the village Terz.Lahnsattel (1027 m)

If you want to spend some time in the nature park Mürzer Oberland especially around Neuberg (10 minutes from Mürzsteg in the direction of Mürzzuschlag) - it is recommended to visit the Neuberger Stifts and the Kaiserhof Glasmanufaktur. You can eat well at the Gasthof Hubert Holzer. Regionality is very important here.
