Europadenkmal im Sperlpark
FeldbachFor a united, peaceful Europe.
In October 1959, a first Austrian European election was held in Feldbach with an impressive result. The official ballot paper allowed people to vote for or against the unification of Europe through a "European Constituent Assembly". The result brought 1,698 votes
for "yes", 44 votes for "no", 4 invalid, this with 72.9% turnout. To commemorate this, the Feldbach master stonemason and later mayor of Feldbach KR Alois Harmtodt donated a Europe memorial stone in 1962 with the inscription "Europe through its
People".
In 1972 the city of Feldbach was awarded the honorary flag of the Council of Europe, which can be attributed to the meticulous work of the European pioneer and activist Dir. Max Wratschgo can be attributed. In 2017, the
small park where the memorial stone was erected (formerly "Sperl Park" or "Europa Park") was officially named "Max Wratschgo Europe Square" by the municipal council. In doing so, the city honored his great, lifelong efforts for a united and peaceful Europe.
