Kostenlose Fassprobenverkostung - Schloss Seggau
When the quiet of winter has settled over southern Styria, you might get the impression at first glance that time stands still here. But don't worry - especially in winter there is a lot going on in southern Styria. In the cellars of the wineries, work continues in the cold months after the harvest, because the new vintage needs to be created and therefore requires a lot of attention from the winegrowers and their helpers.
The Episcopal Wine Cellar of Seggau Castle in its present form is more than 300 years old and was built between 1693 and 1697 under Prince-Bishop Rudolph Joseph Count of Thun. Unlike other wine cellars, it is not underground, but was built standing freely in the terrain. Only later was the south side filled with a 1.5-meter-thick layer of gravel and clay, which served as insulation at the time. Currently, the wine cellar contains 36 historic oak barrels with a total capacity of approximately 150,000 liters. The largest barrel has a volume of 12,000 liters. Old wines dating back to 1929 are stored in the wine cellar.
