The difference in age between Alexander von Zemlinsky and his pupil and later brother-in-law Arnold Schönberg is just three years - and at almost exactly the same stage in their creative biographies, the two composers, so different in nature, turned to the romantic genre of the song cycle: Between 1910 and 1913, Zemlinsky set six songs from Maurice Maeterlinck's “15 Chansons” (in German translation), written between 1896 and 1900, to music in a very personally colored and original late Romantic tonal idiom, while between March 1908 and February 1909, during the most dramatic and tragic period of his family life, Schönberg invented an incredibly free and bold, but in every detail compelling new tonal language for the cycle “Das Buch der hängenden Gärten”, also comprising 15 numbers, from Stefan George's first major collection of poems, published in 1894. The juxtaposition of the two works opens up a fascinating view of what were probably the most productive and exciting years in modern music history.
