About the serviceprovider
The Stift Vorau was founded in 1163 by the Margrave Ottokar III of Traungau. It is a religious center for education and culture, and as a community of priests, its mission is to accompany the people in the parishes of the pastoral region of Vorau on their life journeys.Â
A defensive wall, remnants of the moat, and 15 towers remind us of the times when these means were still used for protection and defense.Â
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the monastery complex was renovated and acquired its present appearance, which has not lost any of its splendor due to the reconstruction after World War II and the artistry of restorers and local companies.
The center features the baroque monastery church, built as a wall-pillar church, with the high altar "Assumption of Mary" and the pulpit.
The imposing sacristy (1716) is adorned with the Heaven and Hell fresco by the painter Johann Cyriak Hackhofer. Hackhofer came from Tyrol and has immortalized himself with his works in the Festenburg and in many churches in Styria.
