Al Di Meola is rightly recognised as one of the top guitarists of our time. His enduring enthusiasm for complex rhythmic syncopation, coupled with lyrical melodies and refined harmony, forms the centrepiece of his music. He has been active on the music scene for over four decades and has received numerous awards. With four gold albums, two platinum albums and over six million records sold worldwide, he has earned himself a place at the top.
Even as a teenager, the Italian-American impressed with his virtuoso guitar playing. After leaving school, he attended the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he was discovered by jazz icon Chick Corea at the tender age of 19. Together with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White, he toured as a member of Corea's band ‘Return To Forever’ and received the Grammy for Best Jazz Performance by a Group in 1975. Al Di Meola mixes elements of jazz, rock and world music more skilfully than almost anyone else. For a long time he was celebrated as the fastest guitarist in the world. Over the course of his career, he has worked with a large number of renowned artists, including Luciano Pavarotti, Phil Collins, Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa and Santana. A particular highlight of his collaboration with other musicians is the album ‘Friday Night in San Francisco’, recorded in 1981 together with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia.
His new album ‘Across the Universe’ is currently in production.
