Kirche "Maria Heimsuchung" in Wegscheid
MariazellThe church was originally built by the Countess of Heister for the inhabitants of Wegscheid. However, the countess had forgotten to obtain the ecclesiastical permission for the construction from the archbishop of Salzburg and so the church was imposed with an interdict. That is, no mass was allowed to be said for 33 years. After a fire in 1894, the church was rebuilt by St. Lambrecht Abbey.
The daughter church Wegscheid is consecrated to "Mary Visitation".
The first church in Wegscheid was built entirely of wood and was erected in 1710 through the mediation of the Countess of Heister. However, since the building permission of the Archbishop of Salzburg had not been obtained, the church was given an interdict, i.e. no ecclesiastical function was allowed to be carried out in it. This lasted until 1743.
When on February 11, 1894 a fire broke out in the inn next to the church, the church was also completely destroyed; with great effort the holy of holies, the paraments and an altarpiece could be saved. The church was rebuilt by Mariazell and consecrated on September 28, 1895 by the Prince Bishop of Seckau, Dr. Johannes Zwerger.
The beautiful altarpiece on the wall depicts "The Visitation of Mary" and is the work and gift of the painter Christian Sandrock from Vienna, while the delicately carved, gilded frame for it was dedicated by his sister, Adele Sandrock. The two bells in the tower are a gift from the Alpine Mining Company.
In 1896, a cemetery was also built here, after the then owner of the "Hotel Wegscheid" Johann Rohrbacher gave the land for this purpose free of charge.
The service times can be found on the website of the parish of Gußwerk.
