The Classic Ski Tour "Über den Stein" - Guttenberghaus

Ski tour for downhill tourers.
With a bit of luck, you will find both deep snow slopes and firn on this marvellous ski tour! The route leads over the Schladming Glacier on steeper slopes down to the foothills of the Koppenkarstein. From there, the route leads across wide terrain up to the Gruberscharte. This is where the long descent from the striking ridge to Gasthof Feisterer in Ramsau/Dachstein begins.

One possible variant is via the Rosmariestollen and the Edelgrießhöhe. However, this is much more exposed and is only recommended for very good skiers!

This ski tour requires a sense of orientation, avalanche judgement, skiing ability and fitness for the long descent.

More information

Exit from the B320 Ennstal Bundesstraße in Schladming-Mitte. Continue on the Ramsauer Landesstraße to Ramsau am Dachstein. Through the village to the Dachstein toll road and via this to the valley station of the Dachstein glacier railway.

Descent from the mountain station via the south-eastern part of the Schladming Glacier along the mighty north face of the Koppenkarst over wide, steeper slopes. Pay attention to the avalanche situation, especially in the lower section. A short ascent in a slight curve to the right (you can shoulder your skis here), followed by a short descent into the hollow between Koppenkarstein and Landfriedstein. Here you skinned up and slightly ascended around the Landfriedstein, crossed the open Landfriedtal and ascended to the Gruberscharte (the last 60 metres in altitude are often blown off, here you can strap your skis onto your rucksack).

From the Gruberscharte, enter the mighty Gruberkar. Depending on the conditions and avalanche situation, keep to the right on the descent. Many sensational slopes follow one another until the forest cover increases slightly and the terrain ends at the Feisterer lift (also known as the Schneemandllift).

From the Feistererhof (refreshment stop), turn right across gentle meadows to the main road and the bus stop. Take the bus back to Ramsau and the valley station of the glacier lift.

The route leads exclusively through the open ski area. Alpine knowledge is important in this terrain, orientation becomes extremely difficult in fog. Avalanche assessment is required for the descent. Always pay attention to the avalanche report and weather forecast.
Of course you will find numerous providers in the Schladming-Dachstein region who will support you at the start of your ski touring career, teach you the correct ascent and descent technique or take over the tour planning for more challenging undertakings and guide you safely through the high alpine terrain.

You can find contacts to our mountain guides at www.schladming-dachstein.at/bergfuehrer.

From Schladming railway station, take bus no. 960 to the Dachstein Gletscherbahn valley station.

Car park at the Dachstein Gletscherbahn valley station.

The terrain is often highly structured and - with the exception of the areas below approx. 1,800 m above sea level - also treeless. This often makes orientation difficult. In fog (“white out”), orientation can become almost impossible. For more challenging tours, we strongly recommend that you use a GPS device and carry the appropriate safety equipment.

As a general rule, when you leave the marked and open pistes, you are in open ski terrain. The open ski terrain is not marked and not secured against alpine dangers.

Most of the tours described are between 1,800 and 3,000 meters above sea level. At these altitudes, your body sometimes reacts more strongly to stress. Your breathing becomes faster and your need for fluids increases. Please take this important fact into account when planning your tour.

Catering
There are several huts and restaurants in the Dachstein massif that are also open in winter. For example, the Dachstein Glacier Restaurant at the mountain station, the Seethalerhütte, the Simonyhütte, the Wiesberghaus, the Gjaidalm and the Krippenstein Lodge. Nevertheless, it is necessary to always take enough liquid and food (e.g. muesli bars) with you. There are no refreshment stops on some of the routes described.

The alpine emergency number in Austria is 140 (Europe 112).
