Stage 04 From Glacier to Wine South Route Ignaz Mattis Hütte - Keinprechthütte

On this and the next 3 stages of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" it gets really alpine. The trail leads right through the Schladminger Tauern, which are known for their abundance of water. In between, on this stage from the Giglachseen to the Keinprechthütte, we still have to deal with the ascent to the Rotmandlspitze, where an incredibly impressive panorama of the surrounding mountains awaits us.
With the opening of the railroad line through the Enns Valley in 1875, the first tentative germination of mountain tourism awoke and with it the demand for trails and accommodation arose in the hitherto lonely and largely untouched high mountains. The Preintaler Alpine Society reacted very quickly to this development and opened the Preintaler Hut for self-supporters near the Waldhornalm in August 1891. In 1897 the Hans-Wödl hut in the Seewig valley followed, and in 1904 the Golling hut was added as the third in the group. The Preintaler were also active in the Upper Valley at the foot of the Zinkwand and leased the so-called "Herrenhäus", which had once been used for mining, and converted it into the Keinprechthütte, our stage destination. Only a few years later, however, the hut was ceded to the Vienna Section because the working group had grown too large, and in 1911 the Section also opened the Ignaz Mattis Hut at the Giglach Lakes. Thus, step by step, the Schladminger Tauern were made accessible to all nature lovers and mountain enthusiasts. Today the Schladminger Tauern are part of the Natura 2000 European protected area of the Niedere Tauern.

Detaillierte Informationen zur Anreise finden Sie hier.

At the beginning of our tour we circle the Lower Giglachsee in the northeast and then tackle the ascent to the Rotmandlspitze with its 2,453 meters. Passing the ruins of a historic miner's dwelling, witnesses of mining, which was of great economic importance for the region until the 19th century, the trail climbs moderately into the outer Knappenkar with its small mountain lakes.

Further on, the ascent, which leads over scree fields and in serpentines, becomes quite demanding in parts. However, having reached the summit of the Rotmandlspitze, we are rewarded with beautiful views for all the efforts of the last kilometers. In front of us are the Giglachkar and the Duisitzkar at our feet. Incidentally, the numerous lakes in this area feed the watercourses of the "Wild Waters" in the Rohrmoos Obertal, a hiking offer that has been honored as a National Geographic hiking trail due to its attractiveness.

The rest of the way on this stage of the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine" now leads us downhill over the Kruckeckscharte and in many hairpin bends into the Neualmkar with our today's stage destination, the idyllically situated Keinprechthütte (Tel. +43 664 4330346) at 1,872m above sea level.

As an alternative to crossing the Rotmandlspitze, a variant via the Duisitzkarsee and the Neualm is possible. For this variant are about 5-5 1/2 hours walking time to plan. Tip: after we are in the middle of the Schladminger Tauern we get the weather forecast for the next stage to the Gollinghütte from the hut host.

In the spring of 2018, a jury and the readers of a major Austrian daily newspaper selected Martina Traisch from the Enns Valley and Manfred Polansky from the Mürz Valley as two "super hikers" who hiked the north and south routes in the summer. You can read about their experiences and adventures at www.steiermark.com/superwanderer: From ideal photo spots to hidden wine cellars in mountain huts. Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Martina and Manfred and also become a "super hiker"? It's very easy: Register at www.steiermark.com/superwanderer and then post your experiences, videos and comments along the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine" - regardless of whether you hike the entire route or just one section. Every 5 stages also beckons a small reward!
