Hartberg Castle

As a border region, East Styria was exposed to hostile attacks for centuries. In 1128, Hartberg was established as a palace by the Styrian margraves of the Traungauer dynasty. Around 1130, the construction of the castle began. In 1166, the noble assembly met here and decided to establish a ring of castles against the Hungarians. These fortified castles, which often became grand palaces, tell us their own unique story.

At the highest point of the medieval town once stood the castle of the Traungauer; today, it is home to the Schloss Hartberg. Rebuilt and expanded in Renaissance style in the 16th and 17th centuries, accentuated in the 21st century with a contemporary extension and surrounded by a romantic park, the nuances of history are reflected.
