“The siclent high”: Discover the snow-covered Triebental valley on the easy, marked snowshoe trail to the Moaralm. On gentle paths through quiet forests and wide alpine pastures, you will experience pure winter idyll before reaching the cozy Moaralm – perfect for a rest amid magnificent mountain scenery.

A snowshoe hike to the Moaralm in the Murtal adventure region is a new experience every time, and since the beginning of 2022 snowshoe hikers can enjoy it even better. A newly marked snowshoe trail with pink signposts and directional arrows was planned and implemented in consultation with the hunting and forestry administration of Admont Abbey. This trail leads mainly on forest roads and climbs steadily to the hut of the Moaralm, which is not managed in winter. However, the hut is very suitable as a rest and snack area, especially on beautiful, sunny winter days. In front of us now lies the Moaralm, a wide basin between the Himmelkogel (2017 m) in the east, the Triebenfeldkogel (1884 m) in the west and the Moartörl in between. From Vienna (approx. 2.5–3 hours):

Take the A2 towards Graz.
At 161-St. Michael junction, change to the S36 towards Judenburg.
Exit at Judenburg-Ost.
Continue on the B114 towards Trieben/Hohentauern.
In Trieben, turn into the Triebental valley.
Follow the road to the end of the valley to the Bergerhube (parking available).

From Graz (approx. 1.5–2 hours):

Take the A9 towards Linz/Salzburg.
Exit at 100-Trieben.
Continue on the B114 towards Judenburg.
In Trieben, turn into the Triebental valley.
Follow the road to the end of the valley to the Bergerhube (parking available).

From Salzburg (approx. 2.5–3 hours):

Take the A10 towards Villach.
At exit 63-Altenmarkt, change to the B320 towards Radstadt/Schladming.
Continue via Schladming to Liezen.
Join the A9 towards Graz.
Exit at 100-Trieben.
Continue on the B114 towards Judenburg.
In Trieben, turn into the Triebental valley.
Follow the road to the end of the valley to the Bergerhube (parking available).

There are enough parking spaces at the Bergerhube. Parking fee, see parking machine.

The snowshoe hike begins directly at the Bergerhube parking lot (1), 1198 m, for which a fee is charged. We orientate ourselves by the pink signposts and turn left directly in front of the Bergerhube. The evenly ascending forest path is well signposted and marked red-white-red. After about 1.4 km we come to an intersection with a wooden bench and the signposts in the direction of Moaralm. Here at the junction Moaralm (2) we continue straight on until we soon see the pink directional arrows and the pink markings on the trees. Once back on the forest road, we have a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. We follow the forest road until we again see the pink directional arrows in a bend to the right. The hiking trail continues straight ahead, in a hollow way, thus shortening the road. Shortly before our destination, we rejoin the forest road and a little later we see the huts of the Moaralm (3), 1539 m, on the right. The way back does not entirely follow the ascent route, although the markings and signage are clear.

Warm hiking pants, gaiters if needed
Gloves (plus a spare pair), hat/headband, scarf/buff
Sunglasses, ski goggles, and sun protection
Water bottle or thermos, snacks
First aid kit, emergency blanket, personal medication
Headlamp, mobile phone with emergency numbers, hiking map or GPS

Additional safety gear in alpine terrain:
When snowshoeing in unsecured alpine areas, an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel are essential. They are vital for quick companion rescue in case of an emergency.

Unfortunately, this tour cannot be reached by public transport.
