The challenging mountain hike to the Bruderkogel (2,299 m) leads from St. Johann am Tauern along varied forest trails and a scenic ridgeline to the summit. Along the way, impressive views of the surrounding mountains open up time and again.

The hike to the Bruderkogel (2,299 m) is one of the longer mountain hikes in the area around St. Johann am Tauern and requires excellent physical fitness as well as appropriate mountaineering experience.
Starting from the parish church in St. Johann am Tauern, the route initially heads toward the Bruckenhauser Inn. It then continues uphill along Trail 947, passing through longer stretches of forest roads and wooded terrain. In the area of the Klacklalm, the landscape gradually opens up, and the trail continues toward Steinermandl (2,192 m).
Crossing the scenic ridge, you first reach the Korbachkogel (2,255 m) and finally the Bruderkogel (2,299 m). Along the way, you’ll repeatedly be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.
The return trip follows the same route. At approximately 21.6 kilometers, with about 1,270 meters of elevation gain and a walking time of about 9.5 hours, this tour is particularly physically demanding and should be planned with ample time.

Coming from Judenburg, take the B114 (Triebener Straße) to St. Johann am Tauern. The trailhead is located in the town center, near the parish church.
Parking is available near the parish church or the pond area.

Coming from Trieben, also follow the B114 to St. Johann am Tauern and park in the town center near the parish church.

The hike begins at the parish church in the center of St. Johann am Tauern. From here, follow the side road toward Aubauer and the Bruckenhauser Inn. Near the avalanche tunnel, you’ll cross Triebener Straße (B114).
On the opposite side of the road, the ascent begins along a forest trail that winds uphill through wooded terrain in numerous switchbacks. Following hiking trail 947, you steadily gain elevation and reach the area around the Klacklalm.
Above the alpine pasture, the trail continues uphill. At the trail junction, head toward Steinermandl and Bruderkogel, while the trail to Eisenbeutel takes a different direction. As you gain elevation, the terrain opens up, and the route leads over the long mountain ridge to Steinermandl (2,192 m).
From the Steinermandl, follow the ridge further to the Korbachkogel (2,255 m) and then to the Bruderkogel (2,299 m), the highest point of the hike. Along the ridge, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Pölstal Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges.
The return trip follows the same route via the Korbachkogel and the Steinermandl. At the trail junction, follow the signs toward the St. Johann avalanche tunnel and descend back into the valley via the forest road. The well-known access trail then leads back to the parish church in St. Johann am Tauern.

A good level of fitness, appropriate mountain hiking experience and careful tour planning are essential for this long hike to the Bruderkogel.

There are no places to stop for refreshments along the mountain trail. Therefore, be sure to bring enough food and drinking water for the entire hike.

You can get there by public transportation by taking the bus to the “St. Johann am Tauern Aubauer” stop. From there, you can start the hike near the Bruckenhauser Inn. This significantly shortens the route compared to starting at the parish church in St. Johann am Tauern. Please check the current schedules in advance—especially the return options—as bus service may be limited.
