Schaubergwerk Museum Oberzeiring

The show mine in Oberzeiring offers a fascinating insight into the rich history of silver mining in Styria. Silver mining in this area can be traced back to around 1000 BC. The first documented mention of the mine dates back to 1267. In the Middle Ages, Oberzeiring was known for its significant silver mine, which was one of the oldest and largest in the Eastern Alps.

Mining played a crucial role in the economic upswing of Styria. Even today, visitors can explore the old tunnels and walk in the footsteps of the miners. Along the paths, one encounters climbing trees, fire pits, stalactites, and crawl spaces. During a guided tour, visitors learn how the miners worked back then and what fate befell them according to ancient legends.

In the museum, visitors can view various exhibits.

A special highlight is the skeleton of a pit dog that provided its services in mining at that time.

The show mine is a unique testament to medieval mining and was awarded the Austrian Museum Quality Seal in 2018.
