Burgruine Ligist

Ligist

The ruins of Ligist Castle with its keep can't be overlooked on a hill north of the market town of Ligist.

The first buildings were erected in the 12th century by the Lubgaster family. Later owners were the Lords of Saurau.

At the end of the 18th century, the decline of Lubgast Castle began. As a new residence, the Saurau family built Ligist Castle at the foot of the ruin. In 1870, the ruin and the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Goess, and since 1928 they have belonged to the Sovereign Order of Malta.

Since 1975, the Ligist Castle Association has been working to stop the decay of the ruin.

A wooden bridge was built over the moat in place of the original drawbridge, allowing access to the inner courtyard of the ruin.

The ten-minute walk from the Ligist marketplace is rewarded with a comprehensive panoramic view over the Ligist basin. The castle is open year-round.
