Burgruine Ligist

Ligist

The ruins of Ligist Castle with its keep can't be overlooked on a hill north of the market town of Ligist.

The first buildings were built in the 12th century by the Lubgas family. Later owners were the lords of Saurau.

Towards the end of the 18th century the Lubgast fortress began to decay. As a new residence, the Saurau family built the Ligist Castle at the foot of the ruin. In 1870 the ruins and the castle became the property of the Counts Goess, and since 1928 they have belonged to the Sovereign Order of Knights of Malta.

Since 1975 the Ligist Castle Association has been trying to stop the decay of the ruin.

A wooden bridge has been built over the moat in place of the original drawbridge, which can be used to reach the inner courtyard of the ruin.

The ten-minute walk from the Ligist marketplace is rewarded with a comprehensive panoramic view of the Ligister valley basin.
