Die Raabklamm

Weiz

With a total length of around 17 kilometres, the Great and Small Raab Gorge form the longest gorge in Austria. The gorge is the ideal hiking area for young and old, especially with children, and offers breathtaking flora and fauna. Whether it's the beauty of the water, which at one time leisurely ripples along, then again tumbles over rocks and rushes wildly. Or simply the beauty of silence.

The Raabklamm circular trail starts in Arzberg (town centre) and is about 12 kilometres long and takes about 5 hours.

The Great Raab Gorge has been designated a nature reserve or Natura 2000 site because of its special conservation value with regard to the biodiversity of the animal and plant world.

Crystal-clear water, romantic footbridges, steep cliffs and gorges characterise the landscape and make for a unique nature and recreation area.

An uncanny variety of natural beauty, as well as plant and animal species, delights visitors. For example, the dipper, kingfisher and black stork are among the rare animal species that can still be seen in the Raabklamm. The Raabklamm was also declared a European protected area because of its many protected caves and the associated bat species and other endangered bird species.

The shade-spending trees of the native mixed forest majestically adorn the hiking trails with their deep roots. Numerous entry points to the unique nature and recreation area invite you to linger in the gorge.

Parts of the gorge are also accessible with prams or wheelchairs.

The Raabklamm nature and hiking paradise is located near the district capital of Weiz and borders on the "Almenland Nature Park" in Arzberg. Experience the natural beauty of the Raabklamm gorge in a special way. With a bit of hiking luck, you can admire the dipper, grey heron and black stork feeding along the Raab river.

The Raabklamm circular trail starts in the centre of Arzberg (parking available).

  • Duration: approx. 5 hours
  • Length: approx. 12 kilometres
  • Ascent: approx. 520 metres

After the hike you can stop off in Arzberg, either at the Kirchenwirt or at the nearby Gasthaus Sperl - Grillwirt. The hike could be combined with a visit to the Arzberg silver mine, the Almenland Stollenkäse or the Moarhofhechtl.
